Frequently asked questions

Do I need a chess group to create a tournament?

No. Create a tournament directly for the standard Chess activity and a selected format, or within an existing group. A chess group is useful when your players also want an ongoing leaderboard between events.

Can I combine Swiss with a knockout final?

Yes. For example, start with Swiss rounds, then advance four players to semi-finals and a final. Elo-X also supports round robin, group stages and knockout. See the tournament format guide for the differences.

Do all players need an Elo-X account?

Yes. Players join the tournament with their own Elo-X accounts. You can start an event directly for Chess without creating a group first.

How should we handle time controls and draws?

Agree on the time control, standings points and tie-break rules before the first game. Decide how a drawn knockout game will be resolved. The Chess activity page explains the supported chess formats.

Is an Elo-X chess tournament FIDE-rated?

No. Using a Swiss format or recording results in Elo-X does not make an event FIDE-rated. Federation-rated tournaments have separate organizer and reporting requirements; Elo-X ratings are independent.
